Role, availability & values
The unit is available through several civilization systems, including a Berber Sultan with Berber Dynasties. Its recorded ranged attack has 14 range; the charged Musket Attack reaches 15 range and deals higher damage. It costs three population and substantial Coin.
Matchup & timing
Use the regular attack while moving around the enemy’s formation, then time the charged shot on a priority target. Preserve distance from anti-ranged-cavalry units and compare the expensive Coin cost with a cheaper counter unit if the army only needs a screen.
Current cost and combat statistics
In the current Definitive Edition profile, a Zenata Rider costs 250 coin, takes 42 seconds to train, uses three population, and has 375 hit points with 25% ranged resistance. It moves at speed 7.25 and has line of sight 14. Its ranged javelin attack deals 27 damage at range 14 every 1.5 seconds. That shot has a 2.5 multiplier against heavy cavalry, a 2.0 multiplier against hand shock troops and artillery, and a 0.5 multiplier against Villagers. In melee it deals 14 damage every 1.5 seconds, with the same cavalry, shock, and artillery bonuses except that its hand attack is less effective against the primary targets than the javelin. It also has an 11-damage siege attack at range 6 every 3 seconds. These numbers make it a specialist light ranged cavalry mercenary: fast enough to choose engagements and especially dangerous to heavy cavalry, but not a general-purpose skirmisher.
Berber Fantasia and charged musket shot
Berber Fantasia unlocks the Zenata Rider's charged Musket Attack. When charged, the ability fires a 35-damage shot from range 15, with the same multipliers as its ordinary ranged attack, and then recharges over 30 seconds. The extra range and impact can punish cavalry or artillery before the rider moves into its normal 14-range javelin distance. The ability is conditional on access to a Berber settlement and its technology: a Zenata Rider drawn randomly from a mercenary pool may not be able to obtain the required upgrade on a map without that settlement. This map dependency is a real limitation when planning around the unit; the base mercenary is available in more situations than its signature charged shot.
Matchups and battlefield use
Use Zenata Riders against heavy cavalry, hand shock troops, and artillery. Their speed of 7.25 helps them intercept cavalry, flank a gun line, or disengage from infantry. They are vulnerable to heavy infantry and light infantry, both of which can punish their low resistance to focused attacks; MercType2 units are another listed threat. Do not send them alone into a mass of skirmishers or musketeers simply because they are cavalry. Their 250-coin cost and three-population footprint make lost riders expensive. Keep them moving and use their ranged attack to focus the units covered by their multipliers, while sturdier cavalry or infantry protects them from counters. Against artillery, close quickly with the charged shot available when possible, then finish with the javelin attack or a supporting unit.
Recruitment and faction routes
The Zenata Rider belongs to The African Royals mercenary roster and is available from the Fortress Age. European civilizations use a Tavern, Asian civilizations a Monastery, Federal American factions a Saloon, African civilizations a Palace, and Italians a Lombard. Berber Dynasties adds a Berber Sultan recruitment route. Germans can receive Zenata Riders through the Adler von Lübeck Home City Card when they are in the Tavern pool, and the United States can access them through the Poker card's random mercenary shipment and Saloon pool. Mercenary availability depends on the map and recruitment list, so a planned counter may not be available in every match.
Relationship to the Javelin Rider
The Zenata Rider is a stronger, more expensive counterpart to the Javelin Rider. Its hit points, speed, and ranged pressure make it better suited to fights against cavalry, while its hand attack multiplier is lower than the Javelin Rider's. It therefore trades some close-combat specialization for a more durable ranged-cavalry profile. Patch history matters: older versions used different cost, hit points, resistance, population, line of sight, and attack multipliers. Current comparisons should use 250 coin, 375 hit points, 25% ranged resistance, and the three-population cost rather than earlier values.
Improvements and changing statistics
The Zenata Rider receives general ranged-cavalry and cavalry improvements where the civilization allows them. Ranged Cavalry Caracole increases attack by 10%, adds two range and two line of sight; Berber Fantasia adds three line of sight while enabling Musket Attack. Some native or civilization technologies affect hit points, ranged attack, movement, cost, or training time, so the final value may differ between factions. The core profile has changed across patches: older versions used 220 coin, 400 hit points, 20% ranged resistance, two population, and 16 line of sight. Current Definitive Edition values are 250 coin, 375 hit points, 25% ranged resistance, three population, and 14 line of sight. This makes present-day Zenata Riders more costly in coin and population but more resistant to ranged fire. Check the active patch before applying older build advice.
Making the specialist role pay off
The Zenata Rider's best value comes from attacking the exact targets covered by its multipliers and preserving the riders between engagements. Use the 14-range javelin attack while approaching heavy cavalry, then let the charged musket shot extend the opening reach when Berber Fantasia is available. Its 0.5 multiplier against Villagers makes it a poor raiding choice compared with general-purpose cavalry, even though its speed is high. Likewise, its light-cavalry classification makes enemy anti-cavalry infantry a serious risk. If the mercenary pool offers it on a map without Berber research access, count on the base javelin profile and do not build the plan around the locked ability.
Stronger mercenary Javelin Rider
The Zenata Rider is a mercenary cavalry unit that improves on the Javelin Rider in overall statistics, at a higher cost. Its hand-attack multiplier is lower than that of its less expensive counterpart, so the choice is not a simple upgrade for every target. Use it when the improved durability or attack is worth the resource commitment and the army needs mobile cavalry.
Check counters and mercenary availability
Zenata Riders can pressure suitable targets but remain vulnerable to anti-Cavalry units and defensive fire. Their access depends on the available mercenary options, map and faction; check limits before planning repeated production. Compare the target’s unit class with the Rider’s multipliers, then preserve resources for infantry and siege support. The higher cost can leave the rest of the army understrength if too many are purchased.
