Role, availability & values

Production is available through Tavern (Europeans), Monastery (Asians), Saloon (Americans), Palace (Africans), or Lombard (Italians). It has 560 hit points. It moves at 4.0 speed and uses 4 population. Training costs 250 Coin; it takes 60 seconds to train. Attack profile: Hand attack deals 25 damage. Ranged attack deals 45 damage. Siege attack deals 46 damage. Hand attack bonuses: 3.0× against Cavalry and 2.25× against Shock troops. Special ability or role: Deflection.

Matchup & timing

Use the Pistoleer when its heavy ranged and siege attacks can be protected: the profile lists 45 ranged damage and 46 siege damage, while the hand attack receives the standard heavy-infantry bonus against Cavalry and Shock troops. Its Deflection ability and other armor details are covered in the unit’s profile; do not send it ahead of the force that supports it.

Current cost and combat profile

The Armored Pistoleer is a Fortress Age mercenary heavy infantry unit in Knights of the Mediterranean. It costs 250 coin, takes 60 seconds to train, and uses four population. Its current profile has 560 hit points and 60% hand resistance, with speed 4.0 and line of sight 16. The melee attack deals 25 damage every 1.5 seconds, with a 3.0 multiplier against cavalry and 2.25 against shock troops. Its ranged pistol deals 45 damage every 3 seconds at range 12 and has an area radius of 1, so nearby enemies can also be caught in the shot. It has a 46-damage siege attack at range 6 every 3 seconds. These values make it a durable but slow and population-intensive mercenary, particularly suited to holding a line against cavalry rather than chasing ranged infantry.

Deflection and formation support

Deflection is the unit's defining passive ability. It absorbs 25% of damage that would be dealt to allied units within 12 range, helping protect nearby infantry and valuable support units. The Pistoleer therefore contributes even when it is not the primary damage dealer: placing it beside a vulnerable ranged line lets it absorb part of the punishment while its own high hit points and hand resistance keep it in combat. Healing units can improve the value of this role by restoring health to the Pistoleer after it has redirected damage. Keep the formation close enough for the 12-range aura to work, but do not put the slow mercenary so far forward that light infantry or artillery can focus it. Splash damage from its pistol is another reason to target tightly grouped opponents rather than isolated units.

Matchups and army composition

Armored Pistoleers are strong against cavalry and shock troops, and their hand resistance allows them to stay in a melee longer than ordinary heavy infantry. Their pistol splash and high health also make them useful against clustered heavy infantry, including Halberdiers or Doppelsoldners, though this is not their best specialist matchup. Light infantry, counter-skirmishers, artillery, and anti-mercenary specialists are dangerous counters. Slow movement and short range make it difficult to close on Skirmishers or siege weapons unaided. Combine them with Hussars or other cavalry that can chase ranged infantry and artillery, while the Pistoleers absorb damage and punish units that charge the formation. Their four-population cost and slow 60-second training time make losses costly, so use the aura and healing support to keep them alive rather than trading them one-for-one.

Recruitment and faction access

European civilizations use a Tavern to recruit this mercenary, Asian civilizations a Monastery, American civilizations a Saloon, African civilizations a Palace, and Italians a Lombard. Germans can obtain Armored Pistoleers through the Adler von Lübeck Home City Card if the unit is in the Tavern pool. Maltese players can recruit them from the Tavern after selecting The Mercenary Contractor for the Fortress Age. The United States may receive them through the Poker card's random mercenary shipment and can have them appear in Saloons. As with other mercenaries, the map and faction determine which units are actually available. The unit was added with Knights of the Mediterranean, so it should not be treated as a regular mercenary option in the original Age of Empires III or The WarChiefs.

Balance changes and upgrades

The current 560 hit points, 25 melee damage, and 45 ranged damage reflect later balance changes. Older Definitive Edition versions had 660 hit points, 37 hand damage, and 53 ranged damage, so historical games can show a much more lethal profile. Applicable infantry improvements can raise its durability or attack, and faction-specific effects may further alter its cost and training time. Even with those bonuses, its main value remains the combination of high hand resistance, splash damage, and Deflection. Invest in it when protecting allied units is worth the high coin and population price; choose faster, cheaper cavalry if the immediate problem is chasing skirmishers across the map.

Using Deflection effectively

Deflection rewards positioning: the ability absorbs part of the damage directed at nearby allied units inside its 12-range radius. Put Armored Pistoleers near the units the opponent is focusing, rather than sending the mercenaries after a distant target. Since they have 560 hit points and 60% hand resistance, the formation can remain in combat while the aura reduces pressure on fragile allies. A healer can restore the Pistoleer after it has taken redirected damage, but the unit still needs protection from long-range fire. Against a skirmisher mass or artillery, use Hussars to close the distance while the Pistoleers hold the center. Their pistol's area radius of 1 rewards firing into a packed enemy line, and the 46-point siege attack gives them something useful to do once the opposing army retreats. The combination is most effective when the player values allied-unit protection enough to justify four population and a long training queue.

Resistances and counter planning

Its 60% hand resistance makes direct melee exchanges unusual, but light infantry and artillery attack that weakness from range. Counter-skirmishers also have favorable multipliers against heavy infantry, and mercenary hunters can punish its coin investment. Keep a separate cavalry unit ready to remove those counters before they focus the Pistoleers.

Heavy ranged infantry against Cavalry and Shock troops

The Armored Pistoleer is Heavy Infantry with high hit points, hand resistance and base attack. Its role is to fight Cavalry and Shock troops, combining a ranged weapon with enough durability to remain in the front line longer than a light infantry unit. Use it to protect ranged support and contest mounted threats.

Light infantry and artillery remain counters

Despite its armor, the Armored Pistoleer is vulnerable to light infantry and artillery. Keep it screened from Skirmishers and avoid bunching where guns can punish the formation. Its access and population cost depend on the relevant mercenary or faction option, so compare it with ordinary Musketeers before committing resources. The unit works best as one component of a balanced force, not as a substitute for artillery or ranged anti-infantry.
