Role, availability & values
It has 900 hit points. It moves at 5.0 speed. Attack profile: Hand attack deals 14 damage. Ranged attack deals 14 damage. Siege attack deals 14 damage. Special ability or role: Claims treasures; Regeneration; Trains Buck the Tame Wolves (with the "Mercenary Drills" card). If reduced to zero hit points, it collapses rather than dying; after regenerating 100 hit points, a friendly unit or building nearby can revive it.
Matchup & timing
Use the hero to reveal the map, defeat manageable Treasure guardians and claim nearby Treasures; avoid trading the hero’s health for a reward guarded by a force it cannot beat. Use its training ability when Buck the Tame Wolves are needed; keep the hero safe while units are being produced. Withdraw between fights when damaged so regeneration can restore health instead of risking the hero for marginal damage. If it collapses, keep a friendly unit or building nearby and protect the recovery period until it reaches 100 hit points.
Character and relationships
Ká:nien is a Mohawk warrior of the Haudenosaunee and the loyal friend who repeatedly joins the Black family across the Age of Empires III campaign. He is John Black's closest companion, Nonahkee's protective older brother, and later the uncle of Nathaniel Black and granduncle of Amelia Black. His reserved manner hides a strong sense of responsibility toward his community. He is an experienced woodsman and archer, but also dangerous at close range with a quick tomahawk strike. The Definitive Edition spells his name Ká:nien; the original release used Kanyenke. The change is a naming update to this same character, whose youthful and elderly versions appear in different acts.
Story in Act II: Ice
In Act II: Ice, Ká:nien accompanies John Black to Brunswick after Stuart Black calls for help. They defend the settlement against Cherokee attacks, then discover that British forces and the Circle of Ossus are entangled in the conflict. Ká:nien worries that his sister Nonahkee is in danger. During the campaign, he and John help the Haudenosaunee and eventually reunite with her; he then learns that she and John have fallen in love. Ká:nien accepts the relationship and continues to fight beside John against the Circle. Their pursuit stretches through the Seven Years' War, from a Circle base near the Great Lakes to the mountains and the Russian advance. Ká:nien helps delay the enemy by bringing down the rock bridge, but John dies detonating the final bridge to stop Warwick and the Circle. Ká:nien returns to his village and learns that Nonahkee has given birth to Nathaniel.
Later campaign appearances
Years later, Ká:nien supports Nathaniel as he investigates claims that the Mohawk and Seneca are cooperating with the British. An ambush forces them to seek help from the Oneida. When they return, Hessian forces have raided the village and captured Nonahkee and other Haudenosaunee with assistance from local rivals. Ká:nien and Nathaniel work with the Oneida to free the captives. Ká:nien chooses to remain with his family rather than join Nathaniel's later fight in the American War of Independence. In Act III: Steel, the elderly Ká:nien has kept watch over the Circle of Ossus for decades. He recognizes Pierre Beaumont as its new leader, helps Amelia Black and Major Cooper pursue him, and joins the final assault on the Ossuary. His story links all three campaign generations while keeping his central motive consistent: protect his relatives and community from the Circle's schemes.
Young Ká:nien in combat
The young campaign unit has 900 hit points, 40% hand resistance, speed 5.0, and line of sight 38. His hand and ranged attacks each deal 14 damage; the ranged attack reaches 30 and fires every 1.5 seconds. His siege attack deals 14 damage at range 6 every 3 seconds. Red Bear Arrow is a long-range special attack that deals 300 ranged damage to infantry, cavalry, or Treasure Guardians from up to range 35, with a 45-second cooldown. After standing idle for 3.5 seconds, he regenerates 0.25% of his hit points per second. Like other campaign heroes, he collapses instead of dying when reduced to zero and can be revived by a nearby friendly unit or building after regenerating 100 hit points. He claims treasures and has a long bow range, but unlike a standard Explorer he cannot build Town Centers or Trading Posts.
Elderly Ká:nien and version-specific stats
The older version appears in Act III: Steel and is classified as heavy infantry, unlike the young version. He has 800 hit points, 40% hand resistance, speed 5.0, and line of sight 32. His ordinary hand, ranged, and siege attacks deal 12 damage; the ranged attack reaches 25, while siege reaches 6 and fires every 3 seconds. His Red Bear Arrow still deals 300 damage but has range 30 and a 60-second cooldown. The same passive regeneration rate and collapse-and-revive rule apply. Compared with his younger profile, the older unit has 100 fewer hit points, six less line of sight, two less ordinary attack damage, and five less ranged attack distance. These are separate campaign unit profiles, so the stronger young-unit values should not be assumed in Act III.
Hero control and campaign utility
Ká:nien's long range makes Red Bear Arrow useful for removing a high-value target before a normal engagement, especially an isolated Treasure Guardian or infantry unit. Its long cooldown means the player should save it for a threat that could otherwise delay the mission rather than spend it on routine damage. Keep him near friendly forces so a collapse can be reversed, and allow him to idle safely when his health needs to regenerate. The Mercenary Drills Home City Card can also let him train Buck the Tame Wolves, giving the campaign force an additional support option. His high line of sight and treasure-claiming ability make him useful for exploration, but his inability to establish Trading Posts means he should accompany the army rather than replace its economic units.
Campaign role across Ice and Steel
Ká:nien, named Kanyenke before Definitive Edition, is a central character in the Act II: Ice and Act III: Steel campaigns. He is a close friend of John Black, an uncle and teacher to Nathaniel Black, and a granduncle to Amelia Black. His perspective connects the Black family story to the Haudenosaunee and later events in the campaign. Keep his campaign appearances separate from a standard skirmish unit or civilization bonus: his role is narrative and depends on the mission.
Family ties and campaign continuity
Ká:nien’s relationship with the Black family shapes several campaign decisions and alliances. He is present across two acts, so his choices carry continuity from the earlier conflict into the later story. Definitive Edition uses the spelling Ká:nien, while the earlier release commonly used Kanyenke. Search for either name when navigating older guides, but use the current canonical spelling in this encyclopedia. Mission objectives and the units available alongside him are scripted for each scenario.
